Becoming a Bupa-approved therapist: what our members need to know

by | Oct 2, 2026

We recently had a really useful conversation with Bupa to understand what our members need to do if they would like to become Bupa-approved therapists. This feels especially timely because we have had a real influx of Bupa referrals for families. 🌿

That makes Bupa recognition a genuine opportunity to grow your private practice and connect with more clients. It is completely optional, though, and the decision is yours.

Which practitioners can apply?

Bupa’s process depends on the professional bracket you fall into. The main groups Marc discussed with Bupa are:

  • Counsellors and psychotherapists
  • CBT practitioners
  • Clinical psychologists

Each bracket has its own pricing arrangements. Bupa does not publish a public fee schedule. Instead, the exact fee arrangements are set out by Bupa and confirmed in your individual agreement.

You can find Bupa’s information for therapists to check the current requirements for your professional role. For CBT practitioners in particular, Bupa’s website sets out the specific criteria.

What accreditation and insurance do you need?

You will need to be accredited with BACP, UKCP or an equivalent professional body, depending on your role and route of application.

You will also need professional indemnity insurance in place. You confirm this during the application process, so it is worth checking that your policy is current before you begin. Your supervisor will also need to complete a form, so give them a heads up early on. 😊

How does the application work?

The Mill Hill Therapy Hub cannot register as a practice because Bupa recognises therapists individually through its specialist networks. Each member therefore applies directly as an individual practitioner.

When you complete the form, you enter your own fee. If that fee does not correspond with what Bupa offers, Bupa will let you know. You can then choose whether to accept or decline. This is a normal part of the process and nothing to worry about. 👍

What about other health insurance providers?

Bupa can only be registered with directly. For several other providers, Healthcode allows practitioners to register in one go.

We also receive referrals from AXA, Aviva and Vitality, so it is worth exploring these options too. If you are already registered with other providers, that is great.

Would you like to compare notes with other members?

Health insurance is a big topic, with plenty to compare. We are setting up a WhatsApp group for members who would like to discuss the process, share experiences and ask practical questions. It will sit alongside our wider member WhatsApp community and its interest based groups. 📱

If you would like to be added, just let us know. You can also explore our Services and Membership page or contact us through our contact page. If you would prefer to talk it through, you can book a chat with Marc.
