Hello there! If youโre reading this, itโs probably because youโre at that exciting stage of your private practice where things are starting to pick up. Youโve got your regulars, youโre settled into one of our lovely rooms here at the Mill Hill Therapy Hub, and now youโre thinking about how to reach even more people. One of the most common questions we get asked by our practitioners is: "How do I get on the list for Bupa or AXA?" ๐ง
Itโs a great question! Being health-insurance approved is like opening a whole new door for your practice. It makes therapy more accessible for clients who might have cover through their work, and it can provide a steady stream of referrals for you. However, itโs not always as simple as ticking a box.
We know the admin side of therapy can sometimes feel a bit like a maze, so weโve put together this guide to help you navigate the journey from being a registered therapist to becoming an insurance-approved one. At the Mill Hill Therapy Hub, weโre all about supporting our community of therapists to grow and thrive, so letโs dive into the details together! ๐
The "Registration" vs "Accreditation" Hurdle ๐ง
This is where most of the confusion starts. If youโre a qualified therapist, youโre almost certainly registered with a professional body like the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You might think "Iโm a Registered Member of the BACP, surely thatโs enough?"
Well… not quite. ๐ฌ
For many of the big insurance providers, there is a distinction between being a Registered member and being an Accredited member.
Why the distinction?
Insurers like Bupa, AXA and Vitality are looking for a specific level of experience and external assessment before they add you to their "specialist networks" or "provider panels".
- Registration: Usually means youโve completed your core training, and you're adhering to a code of ethics.
- Accreditation: This is a much more involved process. For the BACP, for example, it requires you to have completed a certain number of practice hours (usually 450) and to have gone through a rigorous assessment of your practice and case studies.
Most major insurers require this full Accreditation status, or at least a few years of post-qualification experience, before they will consider your application. If youโre still in the early days of your practice, donโt worry! Itโs just something to keep on your radar as you build up those hours. ๐ฐ๏ธ
A Deep Dive into the Big Three: Bupa, AXA and Vitality ๐ฅ
Each provider has its own little quirks and requirements. Hereโs a breakdown of what you can expect when you decide to apply.
1. Bupa
Bupa is one of the biggest names in the game. They use something called "specialist networks" to manage their therapists. When a Bupa customer needs help, they are often directed to their "Bupa Finder" tool to choose a therapist from these networks.
To become a Bupa-recognised therapist, youโll need to:
- Apply to join their network as an individual practitioner.
- Provide proof of your professional accreditation (e.g. BACP Accredited, UKCP Registered or HCPC Registered).
- Agree to their specific clinical and billing processes.
- Agree to their set fee structure (this is important to check, as it might be different from your standard private rate).
Once youโre in, your details will appear on the Bupa Finder directory, which is a fantastic way to get noticed! ๐
2. AXA Health
AXA operates a bit differently. They have their own psychologist and therapist panels, and they are known for having quite specific criteria for who they accept.
For AXA, youโll usually need:
- To reach out to their provider registration team to request inclusion.
- To demonstrate a certain number of years of experience post-qualification.
- To agree to their specific invoicing and reporting requirements.
AXA often pays therapists directly, so youโll need to be comfortable with their online billing portal. It can take a little bit of getting used to, but itโs very streamlined once youโve got the hang of it!
3. Vitality
Vitality refers to their practitioners as "Vitality-approved therapists". Like the others, they place a high value on accreditation and clinical standards.
To work with Vitality, youโll need to:
- Apply through their provider portal.
- Show that you meet their clinical and ethical standards.
- Demonstrate appropriate experience (again, usually leaning towards accredited status).
Vitality is very focused on "healthy living" and outcomes, so they might have specific treatment guidelines or reporting that they like you to follow. ๐

Is it worth the effort? ๐ค
You might be looking at the list of requirements and thinking "Wow, thatโs a lot of paperwork!" And youโre not wrong! There is definitely an administrative burden when you first sign up, and you do have to play by the insurers' rules when it comes to fees and session limits.
However, the benefits can be huge:
- Increased Referrals: Many people only seek therapy because their insurance covers it. By being on these panels, youโre accessible to a much wider pool of clients. Many clients use our health insurance filters on our Practitioners page every week, so if you appear, you will get more clients.
- Credibility: Being "Bupa-recognised" or "Vitality-approved" acts as a bit of a badge of honour. It tells potential clients (and other professionals) that youโve met high clinical standards.
- Financial Stability: Insurance referrals can provide a more consistent flow of work, helping you fill those gaps in your diary. ๐
How the Mill Hill Therapy Hub Supports Your Journey ๐ค
At the Mill Hill Therapy Hub, weโre more than just a place to rent a room. Weโre a family-run business, and weโre genuinely invested in seeing our members succeed. We know that the journey to accreditation and insurance registration can feel a bit lonely, which is why our community is so important.
When you join us as a member, you get a lot more than just a key to a room:
- Referrals from us: We regularly receive enquiries from people looking for therapists, and we love being able to point them toward our talented members.
- Social Events: We host regular social events (like our famous community sushi nights!) where you can chat with other therapists who have already been through the insurance process. Thereโs nothing like a bit of peer advice over a cup of tea! โ๏ธ
- Choice of Spaces: We now have 6 beautiful rooms across 4 different sites in London. Whether you need a cosy room for 1-to-1s or a space for a small group workshop, weโve got you covered.
- Little Touches: We pride ourselves on the details: from keeping our "little libraries" filled to making sure every room has that warm, inclusive feel that helps clients feel at ease from the moment they walk in. ๐ฟ

Practical Steps to Get Started ๐
If youโre ready to take the plunge, hereโs a quick checklist to get you moving:
- Check your status: Are you "Registered" or "Accredited"? If youโre not accredited yet, check your professional bodyโs website to see what the requirements are to level up.
- Gather your docs: Youโll need your CV, qualification certificates, professional indemnity insurance details and your professional body membership number.
- Research the fees: Each insurer pays different rates. Make sure these align with your business goals before you sign a contract.
- Set aside time: The applications can be long! Block out a Tuesday evening or a Sunday afternoon to sit down with a coffee and get them done. โ๏ธ
