The Ultimate Guide to Setting Up Your Therapy Space: From Furniture to Tech

by | Jul 18, 2026

Creating a private practice is such an exciting milestone! 🌿 Whether you are moving into your first permanent room or refreshing your current space, the environment you build is a vital part of the therapeutic process. It’s more than just decor; it’s about creating a safe, professional, and inclusive container for your clients.

At the Mill Hill Therapy Hub, we’ve spent years refining our spaces to ensure they meet every need, so we’ve put together this guide to help you do the same.

The Foundations: Furniture & Comfort

Your seating is the heart of the room. When choosing armchairs, look for a balance of support and softness. Aim for a seat height of around 17–19 inches so clients can sit and stand easily. 🛋️ We recommend fabric over leather, it feels much warmer and less clinical! Don’t forget a small side table within reach for tissues and water.

Lighting & Atmosphere

Lighting sets the mood instantly. Avoid harsh fluorescent ceiling lights at all costs! Instead, layer your lighting with floor and desk lamps using warm bulbs (around 3000K). Natural light is a dream, but make sure you have high-quality blinds or shutters to maintain privacy and manage glare during those sunny afternoons. ☀️

Tech & Climate Control

Reliable, high-speed WiFi is non-negotiable, especially for hybrid or online work. Keep your "invisible tech" tidy with cable management boxes to avoid a cluttered look. For year-round comfort, ensure you have both a powerful radiator for chilly winter mornings, ideally a smart one that you can control on an app, and air conditioning or a quiet fan for the summer. 🌡️

Practicalities & Security

Small details make a big difference. A visible but silent analogue clock helps you manage time without that distracting tick-tock. 🕰️ Think about access too; keyless entry systems are seamless for therapists who want to avoid the "lost key" panic, though traditional keys feel more familiar to some. Always ensure your clients have easy loo access and fresh water available.
